Bio

Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa is a Rwandan high-profile leader, economist, and financial expert with 25+ years of experience in international banking, trade, finance, and economic development. She is the immediate former Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, a position she held after critical roles in Rwanda as Central Bank Deputy Governor, Minister of Trade and Industry, and Minister of State in charge of Economic Planning. Dr. Monique has a track record of innovative leadership in designing and implementing economic reforms and promoting intra-African trade and investments. She has contributed to shaping Africa’s financial systems, facilitating collaboration among Pan-African financial institutions such as the Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions – The Africa Club, and establishing SMEs, women and youth as key actors in value and supply chains and the digital economy. She serves on a number of advisory boards, including the G20 Africa Expert Panel.

Dr. Monique has practical political economy and diplomacy experience, adept at fostering partnerships, driving growth initiatives and reforms, and implementing effective financial solutions. She is intentional about framing accountability and transparency around interventions, as exemplified by her initiative “Women and Youth Financial and Economic Inclusion – WYFEI 2030.” Her book, SEED, a legacy to the African Union and an inspiration to the youth, reinforces her thought leadership and commitment to advancing a better world in which Africa is a powerhouse of solutions, aligned with geostrategic shifts and the acceleration of Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the SDGs, with tangible achievements on the ground. Dr. Monique holds an MA and PhD in Economics from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, which also recognized her academically sound policy work and inclusive approaches with an Honorary Doctor of Commerce. A wife and mother of two sons and one daughter, she is fluent in English and French.
