UNGA Side Event: U.S. Global Health Policy Shifts and African Health Financing Innovations

September 23 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The America First Global Health Strategy was released by the Trump Administration last September, charting a new pathway for U.S. global health assistance. Since then, the Administration has signed 34 Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) — 22 across Africa — to establish U.S. global health assistance and country co-financing commitments. As African nations design implementation plans in line with the MOUs, they are also establishing domestic resource innovations to increase financing for health infrastructure and service delivery. The MOUs signal an important shift in the goal of country ownership and how global health support will be financed and delivered. It is imperative that such rapid shifts in policy are matched with investments in the systems, structure, and accountability measures necessary to ensure their ultimate success.

This event will cover:

  • Shifting U.S. policies for global health financing
  • Innovations in domestic resource mobilization for health across Africa
  • Opportunities to leverage new health financing mechanisms and global partnerships to strengthen health systems
  • Practical recommendations for policymakers and partners to advance sustainable health financing
